Maritime Safety and Shipboard firefighting

Presented in cooperation with the Pacific Maritime Institute

Expectations

This is a fast-paced course geared toward professional merchant mariners. Cadets will be expected to perform in the same manner as adults. The course includes both classroom instruction and high stress physically demanding swimming and firefighting test exercises.

Cadets must be fully mobile, in good health, and not have any issues with working in confined spaces, swimming in deep water, or following directions.

Cadets can use the certification earned through the training to apply for a USCG Merchant Mariner Credential to work in the maritime industry.

Prerequisites

  • Minimum Training: NSCC Recruit Training
  • Minimum Rate: Seaman Apprentice
  • Minimum Age: 14
  • Conduct Record: No conduct issues in the past 6 months and demonstrates a high level of maturity
  • PRT: Passed standard PRT within the past 6 months
  • Swimmer Qualification: You must be able to swim and tread water for at least 1 minute. Basic Swimmer Qual required. 3rd Class Swimmer Qual preferred. Students who cannot swim or express a fear of being in the water will be dis-enrolled per Pacific Maritime Institute policy.
  • Waiver Form: Parents of minors must sign the Pacific Maritime Institute's liability waiver form. Cadets who are 18 years old must sign the waiver form themselves.

To take this course on your own, normal tuition is $1,050.00

Transportation

Members are responsible for their transportation to and from the training site, this includes making your own shuttle arrangements to and from the airport. Do not purchase tickets until your orders are confirmed.

  • Complete the Pre-Reporting Information Form once you've made your travel arrangements.
  • Cadets will report to and depart from the Pacific Maritime Institute.
  • Train/Air/Bus: No "Unaccompanied Minors" that require an adult for pick-up or check-in.
  • Arrive at the training site between 1300 and 1600.
  • Depart from the training site at 1030. Shuttle pick up reservations must be scheduled for between 1000 and 1100.

Berthing

Cadets will be housed aboard USCG Base Seattle in an open bay setting on cots. Cadets must bring their own sleeping bag and pillow.

Laundry services are not available.

Spending Money

Cadets may bring a reasonable amount of spending money or debit card. ATMs are available on base. Cadets will have the opportunity to visit the USCG Exchange and if earned, liberty in Seattle. We are not responsible for lost or stolen cash, cards, or other valuables.

Course Description

This is required by the STCW 2010 code for all mariners with safety or pollution control duties. Basic Training (Basic Safety Training) combines all four elements of basic safety into a 5-day program. Training may be taken individually depending on attendee's needs. These courses are designed for seafarers in order to provide immediate life-saving first aid until the arrival of first–aiders of greater training. This course is created to meet the standards of competency in elementary first aid, fire fighting, personal safety and personal survival.
